THE THEATRE of EVERYDAY LIFE
Photographs and true tales from ordinary life
Unit 28 Guildhall Arcade, Preston
16th – 19th December 2009
‘The Theatre of Everyday Life’ was presented in a vacant shop unit in the Guild Hall Arcade, Preston. Made specifically for the space, the installation combined elements of cinema and old fashioned slide shows to produce a touching glimpse into strangers’ lives.
The installation incorporated recordings made with participants - sometimes these voices contextualised the images, other times they playfully mystifyed the viewer.
The project aims to democratise art photography. Simply taken ‘in the moment’ with no artistic agenda or intent, the work forces a reappraisal and re-evaluation of the humble snapshot – not only as significant photography, but as a mirror of our own life experience. ‘The Theatre of Everyday Life’ challenges preconceived ideas about other people’s lives, ageing, and ultimately our own mortality.
